· I believe the active involvement of the U.S. in international affairs is vital to our national security and necessary to avoid future conflicts.
· I believe our membership in defense alliances such as NATO remain essential to our national security. I do believe that we must be firm with our NATO allies to hold them to their funding commitments, but I do not believe threats of withdrawal from the alliance help those efforts.
· Our membership in international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization are also important, but we must be strong and active voices within those bodies to make them live up to the missions they were create for. Strong partnerships with like-minded allies, such as the United Kingdom and Australia, will be vital to keeping both organizations functioning on democratic and free-market beliefs.
· We need to make clear to Russia and China that we have no problem with their active participation in the world or the growth of their economies. What we do have a problem with is the belief of both nations that they deserve spheres of influences over neighboring countries. Mexico and Canada are our neighbors and allies, but we earn that friendship by our actions. They are not our “sphere of influence.” Russia and China are free to develop similar friendly ties with their neighbors, but we must be ready to counter any actions they take to control their neighbors by force or threats.
